MATCH PREVIEW

BAYER LEVERKUSEN v ZURICH

Bayer Leverkusen welcome FC Zürich in a clash between Group A’s top two, with the home side seeking revenge for a 3-2 away loss in the reverse fixture. A win for Leverkusen and a draw in the group’s other game will guarantee the hosts’ progression in the tournament, while Zürich can go through with victory here in Germany.
Leverkusen will have confidence though, as they are yet to lose a Europa League (EL) group game at home (W5, D2), conceding just three goals in the process. The German side are also handy in front of goal, netting at least once in each of their six competitive home games this season (W2, D1, L3) – albeit in five of them they also conceded.
The visitors will be looking to start quickly, having scored first and been winning at half-time in five of their last six competitive matches. On the road, Zürich have been strong this season, losing just one of their last seven away games (W5, D1, L1, in all competitions), recording just one clean sheet during that period.
Like the reverse fixture, this could be a high-scoring affair. Seven of Leverkusen’s last eight competitive matches have produced over 3.5 goals – the same can be said of Zürich’s last six.
Players to watch: Kai Havertz has scored three of Leverkusen’s nine EL goals, while Stephen Odey scored Zürich’s winner in the reverse fixture, and has hit the net in his last four games.
Stat attack: Leverkusen have had a half-time lead in just one of their six competitive home games this season.
In their respective domestic leagues, Leverkusen have conceded nine of 13 goals, and Zürich have scored nine of 13 goals, during the second-half.
Six of Zürich’s last seven wins (in all competitions) were by a one-goal margin, including all three EL victories.
