MATCH PREVIEW

BAYERN MUNICH v AEK ATHENS FC (CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - GROUP STAGE)

Despite their worst start to a league season in seven years, the Champions League (CL) has presented some much-needed respite for Bayern Munich who could secure qualification from Group E providing results go their way. They are undefeated in the group (W2, D1) which includes an away victory against Wednesday’s opponents AEK Athens just two weeks ago.
After a rocky patch of no win in four, Bayern have now won four of their last five in all competitions (W4, D1), however not in a comprehensive manner. Three of those five wins were by a margin of just 1+ goal and they have kept just one clean sheet in that time.
It’s make-or-break time for AEK Athens as they travel to Germany needing a win to keep their CL hopes alive. The Greek Champions have never made it past the group stage of the competition and they have lost all three of their Group E matches so far.
Despite prospects of progression looking bleak, AEK have kept three successive clean sheets and their defeat to Bayern was their only defeat in seven matches (all competitions) (W4, D2, L1). Defeat to Ajax in the first game was their first away defeat in Europe in eight games (W2, D5, L1).
Players to watch: Bayern star Robert Lewandowski looks set to make his 100th European club competition appearance and will be hoping to add to his tally of 11 for the season.
Returning from injury, exciting prospect Lucas Boye netted and assisted on his first start for AEK two weeks ago and could be key for his side’s chances.
Stat attack: Bayern are without a win in three European home games.
Home or away, Bayern have never lost to a Greek club (W8, D2).
All of AEK previous five games have finished to nil either way.
