MATCH PREVIEW

MONTPELLIER v MARSEILLE (FRANCE: LIGUE 1)

Montpellier (third) and Marseille (fifth) face off in what should be an interesting battle between two potential candidates for European places.
After claiming their third-straight home win against Bordeaux (2-0), Montpellier will looking to extend their great ten-game unbeaten run (W4, D6). If the ‘Montpelliérians’ win this one, it would be the first time since September/November 2015 that any Montpellier side has recorded four consecutive home wins in L1.
The visitors will hope to claim a second-straight away success for the first time this campaign. Michel Der Zakarian will be satisfied with his side’s recent offensive performances, as Montpellier have scored eleven goals in their last five fixtures in the league (2.2 per game).
Relevantly, Marseille have conceded at least two goals in five of their last six away L1 fixtures (W2, D1, L3). After two-straight wins in the league, the ‘Olympians’ suffered a 2-0 home loss in the French ‘Classico’ against historical rival PSG at home last weekend.
Encouragingly for them, Rudi Garcia and his side boast the second-best offensive record in L1 with 22 goals scored so far (two per game). However, their record at Stade de la Mosson against Montpellier stands at: W9, D8, L14 (29 goals scored/42 goals conceded).
Players to watch: Montpellier top scorer Andy Delort highlighted his recent form by scoring one goal in each of his last five L1 appearances, while Florian Thauvin (Marseille) has seven goals and two assists in L1.
Stat attack: Montpellier have registered a clean sheet in each of their last three home L1 fixtures.
Meanwhile, over that same period, Marseille have kept only one clean sheet in their last 12 trips in the league.
With only two league goals conceded in six home fixtures so far, Montpellier have the second-best home defensive record in 2018/19.
