History will be made in Baku as Azerbaijan (FIFA ranking: 105th) and Kosovo (FIFA ranking: 141st) face-off in the UEFA Nations League, with both teams meeting on a football pitch for the first time ever.
Azerbaijan have won just three of their last 12 matches (W3, D2, L7), although two of those victories have come in their last three. The hosts didn’t do well in their last competitive tournament – losing six of their ten World Cup (WC) qualifying matches (W3, D1, L6), finishing second-bottom of their group.
One of their three wins in that campaign was a 1-0 home victory over Norway though, an indicator of Azerbaijan’s potential. Playing in Azerbaijan the hosts have a mixed record in their last ten matches (W4, D2, L4), but did win 3-0 over Kyrgyzstan in their last home game.
One of the youngest footballing nations, Kosovo are currently on a four-match winning run, three of those to nil. Having won none of their ten WC qualifying fixtures (D1, L9) and finishing bottom of the group, the visitors have a chance to start afresh here.
However they will have to get over their goal-shy nature in competitive matches if they want to get a result here – Kosovo have scored just twice in their last nine games, and have conceded at least two goals in seven of those.
Players to watchVagif Javadov has nine goals for Azerbaijan and is their second all-time top-scorer, while Elba Rashanihas three goals for Kosovo and is their joint-top goal scorer.
Stat attack: Azerbaijan haven’t won two consecutive matches since October 2016, before that, it was back in March 2010.
In Kosovo’s history, they have picked up 57% of their victories since November 2017.
Kosovo are winless in five away competitive matches (D1, L4), scoring just one goal and conceding nine.
