MATCH PREVIEW

The inaugural round of the UEFA Nations League gets underway as two old foes from the British Isles meet in League B, Group Four, with Wales hoping to beat Ireland in a competitive match for the first time in their history.
Ryan Giggs takes charge of Wales for only his fourth game (W1, D1, L1), and eighth total game in football management following a brief stint with Manchester United in 2014. This will, however, be his first game in charge of the national side at home, where Wales have lost just once in their last 14 competitive games (W9, D4, L1).
Ireland won’t be a pushover though – they were unbeaten on the road in their 2018 World Cup (WC) qualifying campaign (W3, D2), but have lost their last two away matches.
Wales have beaten Ireland five times in their history, with all those victories coming in friendly games. In four competitive H2H matches, Wales have never won (D2, L2).
Expect rivalry in this game – while neither side qualified for the recent WC, Ireland made it to the play-off stage at Wales’ expense.
Players to watch: Gareth Bale has scored eight goals in his last seven La Liga appearances. He has seven goals in nine appearances for Wales in 2018.
James McClean (Ireland) was the man to end Wales’ WC dreams on his last visit here, he could seriously dent their neighbours’ Euro 2020 aspirations with another winner here.
Stat attack: Wales have failed to beat Ireland in any of the last eight meetings (D4, L4) with their last victory coming back in February 1992 (1-0).
Ireland are unbeaten in seven of their last eight competitive away games (W4, D3, L1).
Ireland have had under five corners in each of their last five away matches.
