The first derby of the 2018/19 La Liga (LL) season sees Getafe travel to 33-time winners Real Madrid for ex-Spain boss Julen Lopetegui’s competitive debut in the Bernabéu hot seat.
Madrid began life without legends Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo with a tough extra-time 4-2 loss to fierce rivals Atlético Madrid in the 43rd UEFA Super Cup last Wednesday. They will look to dust themselves down and kick-start their LL campaign on the right foot after finishing third last season, an embarrassing 17 points off champions Barca.
Manager Pepe Bordalás guided Getafe from the second division relegation zone back into the top-flight in 2017. Last term, Getafe came agonisingly close to grabbing a Europa League spot after picking up an impressive 55 points. Will Bordalás’ men keep rising to the top?
Los Blancos have lost only one of their 13 home LL meetings (W11, D1) to Getafe, who have conceded a whopping 30 goals in their last seven trips to the Bernabéu.
Players to watch: Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus has left a huge void at Madrid. Can Wales star Gareth Bale step it up as the Spanish giants’ main man and prove his critics wrong this season?
New Getafe forward Jaime Mata has high expectations on his shoulders. Mata was the leading scorer in the second division last season with 33 goals in 39 games for Valladolid.
Stat attack: H2H, these sides have never had a goalless draw (26 league meetings).
Getafe claimed five LL clean sheets away from home last season, conceding an average of 1.05 goals per game.
Madrid scored more goals at home (54) than any other side in LL last campaign.
Madrid remain unbeaten on the opening day of the LL season since 2008/09, when they suffered a 2-1 defeat away at Deportivo La Coruña.
