MATCH PREVIEW

The Johan Cruijff ArenA plays host in the first round of the new Eredivisie season, as Ajax entertain Heracles. the Amsterdammers (Ajax) have been tipped up for title glory by many experts, and the stats point heavily in Ajax’s favour.
Europa League finalists in 2017, Ajax should also be the fitter side, having already played three Champions League qualifying matches (W2, D1). Erik ten Hag has also spent a whopping €41m on signings, with the most notable being returning local hero Daley Blind.
This is Frank Wormurth’s first league game in charge of Heracles following John Stegeman’s departure. Given Heracles’ poor end to pre season, Wormurth is apprehensive, and after a 1-0 loss to lower league Helmond Sport, he simply said: “This does not make me feel like we are ready for Ajax”.
In stark contrast, Heracles have spent just €250k on signings, with 12 new faces giving the team an air of unfamiliarity. Worse yet, only 11 of the 42 points gained by Heracles last term came from away matches, in a sequence that saw them win just two of 17 away games.
Players to watch: Dušan Tadić has scored in two of Ajax’s three competitive matches this season. The new boy is bringing a hint of Premier League quality to the capital!
Heracles’ new goalkeeper could be very busy today. However that hasn’t dampened Janis Blaswich’s spirits, with the stopper saying: “To make your debut in front of 50,000 people is a dream”.
Stat attack: As good at home as Heracles are poor away, Ajax lost just two games at home all last term.
Collectively, 53 of these sides’ 68 games last season finished with over 2.5 goals in total.
Ajax have won on ten of Heracles’ last 12 visits to the ArenA (W10, D2).
