MATCH PREVIEW

Austria welcome world champions Germany for a friendly match at the Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt. These two national teams once played one of the most memorable WC games at the 1978 WC, when the Austrians eliminated (West) Germany with a 3-2 win, in a match known by the losers as ‘The Shame of Cordoba’ even today.
These nations have a deep historical rivalry. Though Austria dominated their German counterparts in the first five ever matches (W4, D1) over 100 years ago, their overall H2H record against them has changed enormously, currently standing at: W8, D6, L25.
Since their shameful loss in 1978, Germany are on a good run of 17 games against Austria with only one loss (W14, D2 across the remainder). They have also won the last nine H2H fixtures. The last four friendly matches between these sides have also seen Germany score at least three times.
What bodes well for Austria, however, is a record of twelve international games with only one loss (W7, D4) across all competitions. They are currently on a run of six consecutive wins.
Players to watch: All eyes will be on Manuel Neuer. If the Bayern Munich goalkeeper withstands this test after being injured the whole season, he will be No. 1 in the German WC squad.
Louis Schaub of Rapid Vienna is a young, upcoming striker. He has scored four goals in his last six caps for Austria.
Stat attack: The Germans have lost only once in 23 games (W16, D6). However they are winless in their last four friendly matches (D3, L1).
Four of the last six games involving Austria (all competitions) have produced over 2.5 goals. They also kept a clean sheet in four of them.
Germany have won their last six fixtures on Austrian soil with five of them producing over 2.5 goals.
