MATCH PREVIEW

Seventh-placed Milan’s last home game resulted in Benevento getting relegated, which also looms as a possibility for their opponents, Verona (19th), this weekend in Serie A (SA).
Milan are still in the reckoning for Europa League (EL) qualification as they start this round just one point behind the top six. With games against fellow-EL contenders Atalanta and Fiorentina still to come, the hosts can ill-afford a loss. The Coppa Italia final next midweek could be a distraction and may even be a bigger priority for Milan.
However, they need European football in some form for next season. Four draws in six games (W1, L1) have robbed them of momentum, while a winless four-game home run (D3, L1) throws questions on their ability to stay in the EL race.
That, however, is no solace for the visitors who could be relegated with a loss this weekend. Even a win might not be enough, as they start this game seven points adrift of safety. With seven losses in eight games (W1), even just winning a game looks an improbable task for them.
Verona’s away record is even worse – they have the second-worst points tally (nine) and the second-worst defence (37 goals) in the league. They have lost their last six away games during which they scored just once and conceded 15. With 12 losses in 17 trips, it will take a miracle to improve overnight.
Players to watchGiacomo Bonaventura has two goals in three games for Milan and is beginning to show signs of his vast potential.
Mattia Valoti (three goals in eight games) could be the key if Verona want to get anything from this game.
Stat attack: Verona are winless in 26 SA encounters against Milan at the San Siro (D11, L15).
Milan have the second-best defensive record (14 goals) at home, but the third-worst attack (16 goals).
