MATCH PREVIEW

Although this match falls between the first and second-legs of European quarter finals for both sides, don’t expect any less commitment or quarter given in this 219th instalment of the Madrid derby!
Real Madrid sit one place and four points below Atletico in fourth in what has been a disappointing LL campaign for the reigning Champions. Their form has been good recently, however, as six wins in six (in all competitions) and five straight home wins attest to. They come into this game after a comprehensive 3-0 drubbing of Juventus in Turin on Tuesday and confidence will be high.
After a start to the season that saw them have a severe case of drawitis (six out of the first 12) which put them well off the pace in LL, Atletico have been on a good run in 2018 winning ten of their 13 LL games (D1, L2). Their 2-0 win at home to Sporting on Thursday in the Europa League (EL) means they still have hope of silverware this year and the chance to win their third EL crown.
Since they first met in 1928, Real have had a distinct advantage with 109 wins to Atletico’s 55 (54 draws). Recent history in games at the Bernabeu actually favours Atletico with three wins and a draw (last season) there in the last four LL games.
Players to watch: Boring and predictable, but Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann. Ronaldo is the all-time leading goalscorer in this game with 21 goals, while Griezmann has scored on his last two LL visits here. Both are in a rich vein of form.
Stat attack: Sergio Ramos can move into second on his own in the all-time derby appearances list on 37.
The last time Atletico scored three goals (any competition) at Real was way back in 1999.
Defence vs attack! This game features the joint most potent attack in the league in Real (76 goals), against the meanest defence in Atletico (14).
