MATCH PREVIEW

Two of the favourites to win the World Cup (WC) in Russia will meet at the Wanda Metropolitano, with the game a sell out in what will be the first time Spain will play at the new Atlético Madrid stadium. With the enthusiasm back among Spanish football fans under Julen Lopetegui, it’s sure to be an intriguing clash between two of the game’s heavyweights.
Argentina, ranked fourth in the FIFA rankings, managed a 2-0 win against Italy in their game on Friday and without Lionel Messi. Five-time Ballon d’Or Messi isn’t certain to start in this one either, although he completed the last practice.
Spain, sixth in the FIFA rankings, performed at a very high level against Germany in the previous friendly match, and came away from Germany with a 1-1 draw. The German side are the favourites to win the upcoming WC.
Since Spain were knocked out of the 2016 European Championships in France in the quarter-finals against Italy (2-0), the team haven’t lost a game. Under Lopetegui, the Spanish side are unbeaten in 17 (W12, D5).
Argentina have lost the last three big finals (two Copa Americas and one World Cup). After those three remarkable failures, the South-American side will hope that in this WC they can finally clinch the title, something that to a major extent will depend on Messi.
Players to watch: In the middle of a heated debate on who should be part of the offensive line in Spain, Valencia striker Rodrigo Moreno scored against Germany.
If Messi plays, he will as always grab the attention. If not, ‘Pipa’ Higuaín will be expected to add to his 31 international goals.
Stat attack: Argentina have won their last four away matches.
Spain have scored 28 goals in the last six home games, conceding just one.
In terms of the H2H, they have only met four times in international friendlies, with two wins apiece.
