MATCH PREVIEW

In a match neither can afford to lose, Newcastle and Southampton go head to head at St. James’ Park in round 30 of the Premier League (PL).
Both teams will be desperate for a win here, as merely two points (Newcastle) and one point (Southampton) separate the teams from the relegation zone. As we enter the final phase of the season, there’s currently just three points separating 19th and 13th place!
Newcastle suffered five consecutive losses at St. James’ Park before upping their game at home, and they are now undefeated there in five games (in all competitions). Southampton have become an equally strong away team, though. Six games and no losses (in all competitions) is a PL-worthy team.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino can’t be accused of not wanting to see the silver lining in their precarious situation. After last round’s draw against Bournemouth, he stated: “Southampton is more important than the players and the manager. It’s amazing that we’re part of something that is more important than everyone.”
Players to watch: Dwight Gayle enjoyed a stellar match against Bournemouth two rounds ago, upping his goal tally to five this season. Newcastle will be hoping he can build on that here.
With Charlie Austin out to long-term injury and Manolo Gabbiadini finding himself placed on the bench most of the time, Southampton will be in need of the whole team contributing toward goals here.
Stat attack: After five consecutive away losses against Newcastle in the PL, Southampton have since produced one win and two draws in their last three visits at St. James’ Park.
The last nine PL matches between the two sides have produced two goals or more, and 80 % of both team’s matches this season have seen two goals or more.
Newcastle’s 12 goals from 14 home matches is the shared lowest tally in the league – they’ve failed to score in front of their own fans on six occasions this season.
