MATCH PREVIEW

Sevilla will try to defend sixth place whilst welcoming a fired-up Girona in round 23 of La Liga (LL). The Andalucians have just a one point advantage aver Eibar, and they have failed to win at the Sánchez Pizjuán since early December in LL.
In their first ever season in LL, Girona have almost secured their future in the Spanish top league and are aiming even higher. They currently sit in ninth and are just two points away from the European qualification placings.
Sevilla have been focused on the Copa del Rey the previous weeks, which has consequently been harmful for their results in LL. They have failed to win any of the last three clashes at the Sánchez Pizjuán (D2, L1) and have only gained five points out of the last 24 possible.
The last round of LL held opposing fortunes for the two sides. While Sevilla conceded five painful goals at Eibar (5-1), the Catalan side beat Ath. Bilbao 2-0, a team that had previously gone ten matches unbeaten.
One of the key defenders for Girona, Bernardo Espinosa, was brought up at the Sevilla academy when he was young. Bernardo doesn’t think that the Copa del Rey will affect Sevilla: “They have a lot of alternatives, Sevilla are always the favourites to win”.
Players to watch: Sevilla’s top scorer in LL, Luis Muriel (five), was key in the team’s win in the reverse fixture at Girona (1-0), and he is also the last player to score at the Sánchez Pizjuán.
Cristian Portu (eight goals this season) has been the only Girona player capable of scoring in the last three away clashes for the Catalan side.
Stat attack: In home matches, Sevilla have only failed to score once. Girona are the seventh best away team (W3, D5, L3). Only Barcelona, At. Madrid and Real Madrid have fewer away losses than Girona.
